Mineral resources

The territory is rich in mineral resources. The only diamondiferous province in Europe was discovered in the Arkhangelsk Region. Besides, its subsoil comprises substantial reserves of limestone, dolomite, cement raw materials, gypsum and anhydrites, sands, clays and fusible loams, building stones, groundwater, manganese, copper ores, zinc, lead, amber, jewelry agate and other minerals.

Mineral reserve base of the Arkhangelsk region consists of more than 25 types of mineral resources.

A real advantage of the Arkhangelsk Region is the proximity of the Arctic – "the Storeroom of Russia". Nowadays the economic value of the Arctic zone is undisputed: a significant amount of unique mineral deposits is concentrated within its limits.

The M-8 federal motor road – a motor road of the federal status. The distance between Arkhangelsk and Moscow is 1,271 km.
The P1 motor road – a motor road of the regional status connecting the central districts of the Arkhangelsk Region with the north-western part of the Vologda Region. The distance between Arkhangelsk and St. Petersburg is 1,181 km.

Arkhangelsk is the oldest commercial sea port of Russia. The Arkhangelsk Seaport is a multipurpose port with year-round service; its infrastructure allows handling up to 4.5 million tons of cargo annually (extendable to 10 million tons).

In the Arctic Ocean, along the coastline of the Arkhangelsk Region runs the Northern Sea Route – the shortest shipping connection between the ports of Western Europe and the Far East.

Sectors of the economy of the Region

The Arkhangelsk Region is a land of forest industry, fishery, modern shipbuilding, and Russian cosmonautics. In the territory of the Region, there are more than 24 thousand enterprises and organizations of all forms of ownership and economic activity.

Economic development of the Region in the most traditional branches is based on the enterprises of the timber industry, the construction industry and the elaborate infrastructure of commercial ports, including the Arkhangelsk Seaport serving an essential part of cargo transportation in this area, which is traditionally considered the northern gate of Russia.


Development priorities of the Region

Special economic zones

A special business activity zone - the priority social and economic development area of Onega - was established in the territory of the Arkhangelsk Region. The legal entities as PSEDA Onega's residents while carrying out business activities have a wide array of tax preferences, including a reduced level of insurance contributions and lowered rates of several taxes. Science and education

In the Arkhangelsk Region, a strong base for integrated training of highly skilled professionals of the international level for their careers in the Arctic has been created.

Development of networking in the operation of education programmes containing the Arctic vector should be seen in the context of strengthening the role of employers in the formulation and implementation of the programmes. Systemic coordination with employers, which is not limited only to the organization of internship, is designed.

In the Arkhangelsk region, the "plant- university" system has been adopted. This is a system of integrated training of engineering personnel, which represents a combination of theoretical training and company-based engineering training in accordance with the profile of the training area that ensures high employment rates of graduates in the industry and employee retention in enterprises.

Investment

In 2016, the volume of investment in fixed assets into economy of the Arkhangelsk Region was 90,783.2 million roubles.

In 2017, a positive trend of the indicator can be seen: during 9 months of 2017, the index of physical volume of capital investments compared with the same period in 2016 constitutes 140.5% (the volume of investment was 56.6 billion roubles). Growth of the indicator is much higher than the national average. Investment in fixed assets in the Russian Federation in January–September 2017 went up by 4.2% compared to the same period in 2016.

Foreign direct investment in the Arkhangelsk Region constitutes 291 million US dollars.
