The motorways of regional significance Arkhangelsk – Kargopol – Vytegra (149.9 km) and Dolmatovo – Nyandoma – Kargopol – Pudozh (120.3 km) are the basis of the transport network of the district.
The settlements are connected to the administrative centre with paved motorways.
Transport and economic ties of the district are effected through road transport and via the station of Nyandoma – through rail transport. Between Nyandoma and Kargopol, there is a scheduled bus service.

The major waterway of the district is the Onega – one of the largest rivers of the Russian North. Within the limits of the district, the length of the Onega is 88 km. The largest lake in the Arkhangelsk Region – Lache – is located in Kargopol District. Its length is 33.8 km and the major width is 13.9 km.
