Throughout the territory of the district lies a railroad of the Northern Railway (subsidiary of the Open Joint Stock Company Russian Railways), which links Moscow and Vorkuta. In the district, there are three cargo railway stations – Velsk, Kuloy and Vaga. The main delivery of goods by railway transport is performed via Velsk Station located at the 820 km of the road to Solvychegodsk.
The district has an airport used for small aircrafts. In the year of 2018, it is planned to commence renovation of the airport.

Velsk District lies in the Vaga river basin (first-order tributary of the Northern Dvina). Rivers are the major water supply to industries and public infrastructure. Altogether in the territory of the district there are 938 lakes with water area exceeding 1 hectare.
